Day 1:
Hello! It's time to travel again!
And we are heading to Yogyakarta, a place that I have not explore before!
Welfie before we board the plane!
Landed at the Adi Sucipto international airport and booked a grab to hotel but the grab driver told us that they are not allowed to park at the airport so he gave us an instruction where he will be waiting for us at. The grab there are unlike Singapore's grab where you will be charge with a penalty fee for being late, there we can still spend some time to find our way there and they never charge us any penalty.
So, from The Adi Sucipto internation airport, we have to walk over to the Terminal A.
Terminal A is also the Adi Sucipto domestic airport.
And we have to cross over and walk pass the Maguwo train station.
And after the train station, you will see a big car park. According to the grab driver, they are not allowed to even go into this car park, so he is waiting for us at the roadside outside the carpark.
Oh, and did I mention how cheap the grab is? It's RP29000 (=SGD$2.95) from airport to hotel!!!
Finally reached our hotel! Yes, we booked Marriott hotel because it was not expensive and not far from airport. They are also located next to Pakuwon Mall Jogja too so we can at least find food or shop there if we do not want to travel out far.
Still early for check in so we leave our luggage with the hotel and went to the mall next to the hotel to hunt for lunch.
First lunch in Indonesia of course we have to eat some local food! Not much choice here so we decided to eat at this restaurant call Waroeng Mbok Marni.
Operating Hours: Permanently close
Hm... Very fusion menu... There is local food but also there is pizza.
Food was so so only. Not very fantastic.
After lunch, ready to check in!
Tada! Our room.
The bathroom.
The view from our window.
Rest a little bit in the room.
The pool area.
And time for a dip in the pool! I like it when there are not many people at the pool!
Wash up and off we go to the town!
Here we are at the JL Malioboro, where it is considering as more happening town area.
It is indeed more crowded so be careful of pick pockets (not sure if there is pick pockets here, but everyone should stay alert when in a crowded place no matter which country you are at right?).
Drop by a cafe for a cup of coffee because I had not had any coffee today yet!
Address: Sosromenduran, Gedong Tengen, Yogyakarta City, Special Region of Yogyakarta 55271, Indonesia
Operating Hours: 8am - 11.30pm (Monday to Sunday)
Coffee time!
It's really a happening town here! Still got people Dj-ing!
There is so many amazing artists selling handmade or hand painted stuff here!
Walked around looking for dinner but we ended up having KFC because nothing interests us, and KFC will not go wrong too. Haha!
Operating Hours: 24 hours
After dinner, continue to walk around the street. Saw another guy selling hand painted canvas tote bag! So pretty right?
So, to end our first day, we just have to end it with a massage! Saw this Kakiku and it's the same company as the massage place, I went in El Nido (in Philippines) and so we thought why not just choose this because it seems to be more trusted since it is a massage chain.
Operating Hours: 9am - 10pm (Monday to Sunday)
The price list.
There are extra charges after 9pm!
So good...
Time to head back to our hotel after the massage!
Good night people!
Day 2:
Good morning! Went to enjoy the hotel breakfast before going out!
Can you guess where are we going?
Even our grab driver was wondering why we want to come here! Haha! He stopped at the nearest road to alight us, and we have to walk in ourselves.
And the hint is this signboard!
Passing by some field before reaching...
And here we are at Kaula Leather crafts workshop! Before coming to Yogyakata, I went to research to see if there is any workshop that we can do here and saw this leather workshop that looks interesting!
Website : https://www.kaula-leather.com/
Operating Hours: Temporarily Closed (They have moved to Bali)
So. first they gave us a catalog of what we can choose to make today and the price list of the item.
Some of the items are made by them and some are made by the people who came to the workshop! Lots of amazing work by other people!
When we reach, there is a lady doing a belt and was finishing soon so the "teacher" asks us to choose the product we want to learn first, and he will come to us once he is done with the lady.
This lady seems having lots of fun doing! She was smiling all the way!
Ok, so our teacher is free now and I told him I wanted to make a clutch and Pearlie want to make a Ipad case. So, he started to draft out our design (never that he knows we both are from design schools, Haha...).
Oh ya, by looking at our teacher's hairstyle you know the workshop will be filled with Reggae vibes!
Looking at some of the sample to see if I wanted to add on any details and which leather colour I prefer.
All ready to start!
First, the teacher will give us a piece of raw (cowhide) leather, and we can cut out the measurement we wanted.
Done with my cut out!
Then, the teacher helps me to do the dotted marking for stitching later on.
And next, we use a hammer and nail to punch the hole on the dotted marking.
This part is tiring, and you cannot miss the alignment if not your stitches will not be straight!
Pearlie's item doesn't require any stitching so after cutting out her leather, she starts to colour the leather.
A cat came in to accompany us! It really stays with us throughout!
Because I wanted a tassel on my clutch, the teacher has helped me to cut the length of leather needed for the tassel.
And I have to cut the tassel.
Not even halfway done with my tassel! (and now I'm regretting my own choice! Haha)
Tassel done and it's my turn to colour my leather! How many layer of colouring very much depend on how dark I want my clutch to be.
Sending my leather pieces for some sun tanning to let the colour dry up.
Meantime while the leather went for sun tanning, we went for lunch! We didn't know where and what to eat at that area because it was surrounded by field only so the teacher say he is also going to have lunch and if we don't mind, we can follow him. (of course we don't mind!)
He then brought us to one of the eateries that he usual go call Warang Rizki and it is those very local kind of eatery!
Operating Hours: 8am - 9pm (Monday to Sunday)
Very local restaurant.
They have many dishes for you to choose!
Oh ya, if you do not have any idea how it works, basically, you just need to choose what you want, and they will charge you once you finish choosing.
So, I have chosen mee goreng (fried noodle) and a piece of chicken.
Oh, and this snacks in the tin are for free! You can dip in the gravy of your food or even eat it plain! I always eat just as it is.
Back to the workshop and another cat follow us it!
The mess we made just now! Oops!
Sassy cat!
And this cat decided to stay beside me while I continue doing my clutch! I'm not a cat person and only have dog in my whole life but somehow all the cats here wanted to stay beside me and not Pearlie!
Teacher helping me to smoothen the edges.
Choosing my tread colour.
Teacher demonstrating how to stitch the leather together.
And this cat falls asleep while accompany me!
Hand stitching is easy!
Done! And look how comfortable is this cat! Sleep until like that!
Applying glue to stick another piece of leather to cover the "ugly" side of the back leather.
Next, applying a leather of lacquer to give the leather a more shinny finishing.
Almost done!
Teacher helping me to nail the leather strap that I'm going to attach my tassel on.
Next, secure the tassel using the tread.
Last step, the teacher helping me to press the button in.
And tada! My clutch is done!
I really enjoyed myself at the workshop and feel accomplish because I get to see my design turning into a real product!
Pearlie's ipad cover is done too!
I asked the teacher is there is anything that can stamp onto my clutch so I can remember this workshop experience and he ask me if I wanted to stamp their logo on it and I immediately agree!
Last picture with the place and our clutch before we leave!
Oh by the way, the workshop is also an Airbnb! Guest can rent the place to sleep in and also attend the leather workshop!
So basically, this is like a half day to 1 day activity and by the time we leave the workshop, we felt a little hungry, so we decided to have an early dinner.
Saw people posting about this restaurant call Mang Engking Soragan Castle, on IG so we decided to give it a try!
Operating Hours: 10am - 9pm (Monday to Sunday)
Website: https://mangengkinggroup.co.id/
The exterior is like an old European castle, but it has nothing to do with the food by the way. Haha.
Sun is setting and time for dinner!
The indoor interior of the restaurant.
We were arranged to sit around a pond at the outdoor seating.
The menu.
Ordered a few dishes to try and surprisingly not bad.
This is how the "castle" looks like during the nighttime. Had a great dinner here and with no regrets!
After dinner, we head to JL Malioboro again.
Without further ado, head straight for foot massage! This time we are trying Monggo Relax as it was rated 4.5 stars in google.
The price list.
Personally, I felt both Kakiku and Monggo is same standard. Cleanliness of the place is also about the same so if you are looking for a place to do your massage, both is fine.
Done with massage and walk around JL Malioboro and it's still as crowded as yesterday!
Anyway, after shopping around, gonna head back to the hotel to rest already.
Good night!
